Sara Johnson suit son père à Chicago après la mort accidentelle de sa mère. Chicago est tout le contraire de sa ville natale : immense et cosmopolite. Sara s'inscrit dans le collège du quartier et s'adonne à tous les genres de danse. C'est pour elle un moyen d'expression et d'évasion. Elle fait également la rencontre de Derek, un jeune garçon noir très charmant dont elle tombe amoureuse.
